We invite you to discover the Varėna District – a land that lives in harmony with nature, where forests stretch far, lakes glisten, rivers wind through the landscape, and the sandy plains of Dzūkija unfold.
Čepkeliai is the largest natural area in Lithuania, home to capercaillies, cranes, black grouse and other rare animal, plant and mushroom species. An 18-meter-high observation tower has been built on the edge of the Čepkeliai ravine, offering a spectacular view of the raised bog surrounded by continental dunes.
Bakanauskų Lake and the surrounding marsh were formed by the melting of a block of ice that broke off from a receding glacier and was buried under sediment. A footbridge has been built from the edge of the marsh to the lake, along which you can see the full diversity of marsh vegetation, admire the colors of the marshes, and enjoy the smells.
The Žiežulis Route is a great place for those who want to relax, be with nature and regain strength. No car noise, polluted air, only forest paths, sandy hills and mountains. At the end of the trail you can refresh yourself in the Žiežulis Lake.

TOURISM GUIDE
The Varėna region is a land that lives in harmony with nature – vast forests rich in natural treasures, sandy Dzūkija landscapes, and dunes shaped by ancient winds stretch across the land. The largest rivers of Lithuania and southern Lithuania – the Nemunas and the Merkys – meander through it, while the swift Šalčia, Ūla, Skroblus, and other life-giving streams bubble with energy. Blue-eyed lakes lie calm and serene, and the hospitable and creative local people carefully preserve the traditions of their land.
Here you will also find the Dzūkija National Park, which protects one of the most beautiful landscapes in Lithuania, as well as the Čepkeliai State Strict Nature Reserve. Embraced by pine forests, the Varėna region enchants and attracts visitors from all over the world with its unique nature, cultural heritage, and abundant offerings.
The mobile app "Varėna4seasons“ is made for visitors who seek to explore and learn about Varėna digitally. The app provides route recommendations for each season: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each object is presented together with beautiful photographs, audio records and short films in five languages: English, Polish, German, Lithuanian and Russian.
