Zervynos – A Living Ethnographic Heritage of Dzūkija
Zervynos is one of the most authentic ethnographic villages in Lithuania, located within the Dzūkija National Park, nestled in a bend of the Ūla River. This village is a living testimony to Dzūkija’s cultural heritage – it has preserved its traditional architecture, historical homestead layout, and deep spiritual connection with the forest, foraging, and mushroom picking.
History of Zervynos
Zervynos has been mentioned in written records since the 18th century, although the origins of the village are tied to even older forest-dweller traditions. It was inhabited by Dzūkians who maintained a unique lifestyle – self-sufficient, nature-bound, and community-oriented. During the interwar and Soviet periods, Zervynos remained an isolated village untouched by urban development. In 1999, the village was declared an urban monument, and the entire village ensemble became a protected cultural heritage site.
