Perloja – the Village That Once Became a Republic
First mentioned in 1387, Perloja is a village with an extraordinary past. Between 1918 and 1923, it became the Republic of Perloja – a self-governed entity that had its own president, constitution, army, currency, seal, police, and even a jail. This unique episode in Lithuanian history makes Perloja one of the most curious and inspiring examples of local self-governance.
The village gained additional fame thanks to the monument to Vytautas the Great, erected in 1930. Soviet authorities made repeated attempts to demolish it, but failed – turning the statue into a symbol of freedom and resilience.
The area around Perloja has been inhabited for over 6,000 years. Archaeological finds include 11th-century burial mounds discovered nearby. The name “Perloja” appeared in written records as early as 1378, when it was already home to a grand duke’s estate and one of the 15 key wooden castles in eastern Lithuania.
Strategically located on the main royal route from Vilnius to Grodno, Perloja played an important military and logistic role: guarding road checkpoints, maintaining bridges, and assisting in the repair and construction of royal castles. It was also mentioned in 1387 in the chronicle of Wigand of Marburg, describing a Teutonic Order raid that captured the village.
In 1700, war, famine, and plague wiped out the entire population of Perloja. But by 1777, the community rebuilt and constructed a larch-log church. On April 26, 1792, Perloja was granted Magdeburg rights, signifying its status as a self-governing town.
During the 19th century, Perloja's residents actively took part in uprisings against Russian imperial rule. As a result, the Tsarist government closed the local church. It was returned to the community in 1906, with the condition that a new church would be built.
