Varėna Church of St. Michael the Archangel

In 1893, an Orthodox church was built in the Varėna II railway station settlement. After the Orthodox believers returned to Russia, local villagers pooled together 252,000 marks to buy the church building and converted it into a Catholic church. During the Polish occupation, attempts were made to hold services only in Polish, but Lithuanians persistently demanded services in their native language.
