Memorial to the Dainava district Partisans

The Memorial to the Dainava District Partisans was established at the former Merkinė school stadium — a place where, during the postwar period, the Soviet and special police secretly buried the bodies of killed partisans.

The chapel was built in 1993–1994 through the initiative of teacher Juozas Kaupinis. The cone-shaped chapel pillar rises above the crosses and is adorned with a bell symbolizing the echo of the unheard prayers of the partisans.

Granite plaques bear the names of 400 partisans buried here. In 1998, Vytautas Kaziulionis compiled the list based on historical sources.

Since 1989, crosses have been spontaneously erected on the Hill of Crosses, creating a powerful memorial space with dozens of crosses honoring mothers, brothers, sisters, and families buried with the partisans.
