Skroblus Educational Trail

Trail length  – 12,4 km.

Start of trail.

Digital map.

The trail starts in Margionys village, at the source of the beautiful Skroblus River — one of the most scenic rivers in Dzūkija. Emerging from springs, the water gathers into one single stream. After walking a bit through the forest, the Skroblus educational trail leads through Kapiniškės village along the Skroblus River valley, passing the Skerdzimai (Slaughters') meadow: a marshy fen in the Skroblus valley where the spring-fed Skroblus meanders. This meadow is notable for its rich plant diversity. Here grow species such as the marsh cinquefoil, bog violet, shining club-rush, and two species of orchids. Cranes and meadow larks nest safely here. On calm summer evenings, you might hear corncrakes or quails.

Continuing on, the trail passes near the small Bakanauskai peat bog and Bakanauskai Lake, situated amid inland dunes. Bakanauskai Lake and the surrounding peatland formed due to thermokarst phenomena — when a block of ice trapped under sediment melted as glaciers retreated. A boardwalk leads from the peatland edge to the lake, allowing visitors to experience the diverse wetland plants and, from a comfortable observation platform, enjoy the colors and scents of the bog.
