The “From Chickens to European Bison” route invites you to explore the Varėna region and visit places where you can get a closer look at the animals that are raised and live here. It is a great journey for families who want not only to discover the nature of Dzūkija, but also experience it in a different and more engaging way.

The route includes six unique stops: Žemaitukai Valley, Karpiškės Animal Park, “Varinis Puodas”, “Lapė už Tvoros”, “Taurusis Elnias”, and the Stėgaliai European Bison Enclosure. At some stops, you will meet one of Lithuania’s oldest native horse breeds – the Žemaitukai – while at others you can see farm animals, red deer, or observe European bison.

Route Stops

Žemaitukai Valley – a place where you can see Žemaitukai horses up close, learn more about one of Lithuania’s oldest horse breeds, and discover more about their care, character, and everyday life.

Karpiškės Animal Park – home to a variety of wild and ornamental animals, including wolves, raccoons, various bird species, and other inhabitants of the park.

“Varinis Puodas” – at this farm, you can see the cows being raised here, learn more about their care, and discover the dairy products made from their milk.

“Lapė už Tvoros” – here you will find chickens and get a glimpse into authentic farm life, with an opportunity to learn more about raising poultry and everyday work on the farm.

“Taurusis Elnias” – a stop for those who would like to see red deer up close and take time to admire these impressive animals in a peaceful setting.

Stėgaliai European Bison Enclosure – the route culminates with an encounter with European bison. At the Stėgaliai enclosure, you can observe these magnificent animals in a specially designated area and get to know some of the most impressive inhabitants of the forests of Dzūkija.
