Witch's Stone

According to legend, a witch (or fairy) was carrying a large stone, intending to dam the Nemunas River. However, when a rooster crowed, the string of her apron snapped, and the stone fell to the ground. The Witch’s Stone (Raganos akmuo) now lies on the edge of a ravine, right by the road from Liškiava to Žeimiai — about 100 meters from the Liškiava crossroads, on the right side of the road, approximately 30 meters from the roadside.

This archaeological monument was blown up in the spring of 1941 by soldiers of the Red Army. Today, instead of one massive boulder, the site features 13 fragments, each about 1 meter high. Locals from Ricieliai also refer to the stone as Nevera’s Stone.
