Swamp "Bear's Ass"

Near the village of Marcinkonys, nestled among wind-blown sand dunes, lies a small raised bog known as “Meškos Šikna” (literally “Bear’s Ass”), covering an area of 17 hectares. The surface of the bog is densely carpeted with peat moss (sphagnum), which forms a continuous mat and serves as the primary builder of the bog ecosystem. The pine trees growing in the bog are much smaller compared to those in the surrounding sandy areas.

In spring, the bog comes alive with blooming flowers such as wild rosemary and cranberry blossoms. Visitors can also find some of the most beautiful plant species typical of raised bogs, including tussock cottongrass, narrow-leaved sundew, round-leaved sundew, and bog rosemary.
