Perloja History Museum

The Perloja History Museum presents the rich cultural heritage and unique historical episodes of Perloja. Through interactive exhibitions and guided tours, visitors learn about:

  • The remarkable Republic of Perloja (1918–1923), complete with its own president, constitution, currency, police, and more.

  • The iconic Vytautas the Great Monument (1930), a symbol of resilience that survived multiple Soviet attempts to destroy it.

  • Perloja’s ancient roots, including burial mounds dating back to the 11th century.

  • The village’s strategic role throughout history—serving as a ducal estate, a key royal route checkpoint, and a royal court maintenance hub.

  • The rise and decline of Perloja: from being granted Magdeburg rights in 1792 to devastation by plague in the early 1700s, and later growth with a church, factory, and sanatorium.

  • Stories of wartime upheaval, shifting borders (1920 demarcation line), WWII atrocities, and Soviet-era deportations.

The museum offers guided tours like “Secrets of Perloja” that delve deeper into the village’s extraordinary legacy. For scheduling and visitor information, please contact the museum directly.
