Anzelmas Matutis Grove

In 1971, in the village of Pauosupė, deep in the Dainava Forest, poet Anzelmas Matutis built Drevė — a unique hexagonal wooden forest cabin set atop 23 millstones. The rustic log cabin has a thatched roof, and above it rises a lyre — the symbol of poetry.

Drevė was a tiny world of the poet, where he spent countless creative hours. He would arrive as soon as the snow melted and stay there until late autumn.

To commemorate the legacy of this beloved children’s poet, the national festival of children's poetry, “Springtime of Poetry” (Poezijos pavasarėlis), has been held near Drevė every two years since 1985. Since 2009, the Varėna Public Library has been responsible for preserving Anzelmas Matutis’s heritage and continuing the festival’s tradition.
