Dainava Military District Headquarters Memorial Site

In a bunker hidden deep within the Žaliamiškis Forest, Lionginas Baliukevičius–Dzūkas, the commander of the Dainava partisan military district and one of Lithuania’s most renowned freedom fighters, was killed on June 24, 1950.

The Soviet MGB (Ministry of State Security) obtained this information through a traitor who had infiltrated the partisan ranks. The infiltrator had learned that Dzūkas, while visiting partisan units, planned to spend the night in a bunker known to the agent, located in Žaliamiškis Forest, near the border of the former Leipalingis and Merkinė counties. At around 2 a.m., after murdering the partisan guard Antanas Koknevičius–Švedrys, the agent led an MGB operational group to the hideout.

During the raid, three partisans were killed:

Lionginas Baliukevičius–Dzūkas, commander of the Dainava district,

His adjutant Augustinas Babrauskas–Radvila,

And Antanas Vailionis–Špokas, commander of the Juozapavičius area.

The bodies were desecrated in Veisiejai, and to this day, the exact burial site remains unknown.
