Kaniavėlė Hillfort

The hillfort is situated on a highland promontory on the right bank of the Šipeta stream. The site is almost rectangular, elongated in the northeast–southwest direction, measuring 30 by 20 meters. At the southwest edge, there is a 2-meter-high and 9-meter-wide rampart with a 3-meter-high outer slope. The slopes are steep, 6–7 meters high. The hillfort is heavily damaged by plowing, and the rampart is pitted with holes. The area is fallow, and the rampart is overgrown with young bushes. At the southern base, there is a 0.5-hectare settlement. In 1955, F. Gurevič excavated a 1.5 m² test pit near the rampart and discovered a 40 cm thick cultural layer with corded and rough pottery. The hillfort is dated to the 1st millennium. It can be reached from the Varėna–Dubičiai road by crossing the canalized Šipeta stream, turning right (west) after 300 meters onto the first road, then after 500 meters taking a field path to the right (south) for 300 meters.
